Dance Medicine
Dr. Kim Shemer Kurtzman is both a doctor and artist. Kim has been dancing since age 6, and continues to take class weekly. She attended a pre-professional Balanchine ballet program, a performing arts high school studying ballet and modern dance, and has a Bachelors of Arts in Dance from The University of Maryland. After receiving her doctorate in Physical Therapy, Kim danced in New York City throughout her decade working there as a physical therapist specializing in Dance Medicine. She was the resident therapist at over 50 Broadway shows, for Paul Taylor Dance Company, and for the Radio City Rockettes. Dr. Kurtzman greatly enjoys the mentorship aspect of treating dancers based on her own experience.
Experience
With over 20 years of medical experience, and nearly 40 years of dance experience, Dr. Kurtzman is one of the few physical therapists in the country practicing this specialty at this level. She has both a creative and scientific approach to treating as well as preventing dance injuries. She is adept at analyzing the individual dancer’s specific body needs, assessing dance technique that may lead to injury, and making recommendations for continued health and growth as a dancer. Working with Dr. Kurtzman, and receiving her mentorship and the education gained due to an injury (hopefully minor!) , may just be the best thing that has ever happened to your dance career. Passionate dancers of any age, level, or dance form are welcome.
