Our services
Kim Shemer Kurtzman Physical Therapy takes a global approach to physical therapy. The whole body is addressed, including the skeletal system, muscular system, connective tissue and the nervous system. We love to make a difference in peoples’ lives who are enthusiastic learners who want to get to know their bodies better.
What We Treat
We treat a variety of acute and chronic orthopedic conditions. Common areas of focus are:
back pain
neck pain
shoulder pain
pelvic pain
hip pain
knee pain
foot and ankle pain
We each hold unique specialties in dance medicine, craniosacral therapy, visceral mobilization, treatment of TMD (jaw), vestibular therapy (vertigo), concussion treatment, and exercise treatment of Parkinson’s Disease.
Who We Treat
While many of our patients are typical orthopedic conditions, including injuries of competitive athletes and dancers, we are passionate about “failed cases,” or those who have been bounced around to many providers without improvement.
This population includes patients who are:
hyerpmobile
dealing with recurring episodes of the same pain/injury
in mild/moderate constant discomfort that they have been living with or neglecting for years and are ready to address
looking to reset their nervous system that has been affected by orthopedic pain
Who We May Not Treat
We are not as good of a fit for patients who:
need to come to PT several times per week for a long duration of time (in network PT would be a more cost-effective choice for you)
immediate post-operartive patients who believe they require technology like ultrasound and TENS
wish to be a more passive participant in their care and have the PT do all the work to get them better
are unable to tolerate manual therapies or exercise
have significant neurological involvement
have localized hand injuries (most patients will engage with a specialized PT/OT hand therapist)
have highly involved pelvic floor needs (most patients will engage with a specialized pelvic floor PT)
Dry Needling and other Modalities
Dry needling is all the rage these days and we love it! It is a safe, fast, and effective treatment option which aims at treating tight and dysfunctional muscle, connective tissue and fascia to reduce trigger points. These trigger points can affect the neuromuscular relationship leading to inhibited or dysfunctional muscles.
Both providers are advanced certified in this phenomenal modality. We also make great use of cupping and instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), also known as Graston or scraping, along with specific soft tissue mobilization.
Wellness and injury screens
This phenomenal service in preventive medicine is geared toward people looking to prevent injury and maximize their current activities and wellness.
Screening is a wonderful way to get to know your body to prevent any setbacks from your wellness/movement goals.
I have been in and out of PT for decades. I was a college tennis player, and I still play a lot, but I’m a hypermobile, so I was always getting hurt or having random pains. I thought that was just the way it was, until I met Kim. She was so unlike any PT I had ever worked with, I wondered if this was even PT. (It is! And how it should be!). She helped me understand my body in ways that seem so obvious now, but were not on my radar before; I can’t believe I could play at that level and know literally nothing about my body or how to take care of myself… no wonder I was always hurting! She got me on a maintenance routine that has kept me almost painfree (except one injury, and thanks to her, it lasted weeks instead of months) and I haven’t missed a single tournament in over 2 years! Before I found her, I was too frequently bowing out of commitments and letting my partners down, and every time I played, there was fear in the background that I was going to injure myself so seriously that I’d never play again. I now realize I wasn’t playing my best because I was a little scared of my body. Now I am strong, disciplined, confident and a reliable partner, and I’m playing better than ever! I am incredibly grateful to have Kim in my life. Thank you!
